Posts for Sheep

Purpose: Depending on how you plan to use the posts, different types and materials are recommended. Wood and recycled plastic posts are the top choices for a permanent fence. Line posts are ideal for permanent or occasionally movable fences, while plastic posts are the best option for mobile fencing solutions. For added convenience, consider using a sheep net or the practical SmartFence.
Since the posts will be anchored into the ground, ensure they are tall enough to account for the portion that will be buried. The posts must be firmly secured to prevent damage from the sheep and to minimise the risk of injury. It's also essential to ensure there are no sharp edges or splinters present.
Plastic: Plastic posts are the most affordable option and, alongside sheep nets, are the most commonly used for mobile fencing systems. They are lightweight, easy to transport and install, and often come with built-in holders for electric wires. While plastic posts are weather- and UV-resistant, they do not last as long as wooden or recycled plastic posts. However, their versatility is a significant advantage.
Line Posts: These posts combine the advantages of plastic and fibreglass. Line posts have a fibreglass core coated with a UV-resistant polyethylene layer, making them exceptionally stable, flexible, durable, and lightweight. They also feature adjustable clips and insulators that can be easily mounted at any height, making them suitable for various animal types. The 140 cm variant is perfect for sheep fencing.
Wood: Traditional electric fences are constructed with wooden posts. These are aesthetically pleasing, environmentally friendly, and offer high stability. While installation is more labour-intensive, wooden posts can last up to 30 years and are resistant to fungal decay, requiring no maintenance. They are the perfect choice for permanent fences.
Recycled Plastic: This environmentally friendly option provides all the benefits of wooden posts while also being highly resistant to UV light, acids, alkalis, and rot. Recycled posts are made from recycled materials, contributing to environmental sustainability. Their durability also makes them a financially sustainable choice in the long run, making them ideal for permanent sheep fencing.
