Poultry Energiser Buyer's Guide

Energisers for Poultry fences

Chickens, ducks, and geese are not only kept by large farms; many private individuals enjoy raising poultry, whether for egg production or as pets. However, these birds require ample space to forage and scratch around, as well as fresh air and sunlight to thrive. Unfortunately, they cannot roam freely due to numerous dangers from predators and traffic. A reliable solution to keep your poultry safe is an electric poultry fence. A good electric fence can effectively confine your chickens while keeping out predators like foxes, making it a worthwhile investment for peace of mind.

One of the essential components of an electric poultry fence is the energiser. In addition to various power sources (mains electricity, solar power, or battery operation), the energiser's performance (charging and discharging energy) is a crucial factor to consider.

With a wide selection of energisers available, here are some quick tips to help you choose the right model.

Power Rating: The power of the energiser, often referred to as impulse energy (measured in Joules), should be matched to the size of your pasture, meaning the length of the fence, as well as the type of birds you are keeping. Poultry such as chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys are among the more challenging livestock to contain. Due to their slender legs, insulating beaks, and feather coats, a poultry fence requires more power. We recommend using a strong energiser with a high output voltage and discharge energy (Output Joules). A minimum of 2-4 Joules is typically suggested for poultry.

It’s advisable to opt for an energiser with a higher power rating than you currently need, allowing for potential future expansions of the fence or increased vegetation.

Power Supply: Depending on the location of your poultry run, different power supply options are available. Wherever possible, we recommend using a mains-powered energiser (230V). However, mains units are only splash-proof and should be installed in sheltered locations, such as inside a barn or shed.

If your birds are kept in remote areas or using mobile fencing systems, a solar-powered energiser is the best option. This makes you independent of fixed power connections, eliminating the need to recharge batteries or replace them.

Battery-operated energisers are suitable for mobile or temporary grazing areas, especially in regions with high rainfall.

Quality and Durability: We only stock branded units from reputable manufacturers. These energisers are designed and tested for rigorous use in agriculture and are also suitable for private use. They are weather-resistant, durable, and feature high-quality stainless steel contacts along with robust switches and buttons. Gallagher devices, for instance, come with a manufacturer’s warranty of seven years.

Accessories: If you want to do more than just fence your pasture, such as controlling the poultry fence remotely with your smartphone, you can find compatible accessories for energisers listed in each product description.

Additionally, consider equipping your new energiser with a lightning protection system, the appropriate number of earth stakes and earth cables, and for battery-operated devices, ensure you have the correct battery or rechargeable unit.
