Pig Energiser Buyer's Guide

Energisers for pigs

Electric fences for pigs are a popular choice, particularly since pigs are often kept outdoors. A reliable and secure electric fence can effectively contain your pigs while keeping wild boars at bay, making it a sensible investment. In some areas, there is a risk of domestic pigs coming into contact with wild boars, which could expose them to diseases such as swine fever.
Key Elements of an Electric Pig Fence
An essential component of an electric pig fence is the energiser. In addition to various power sources (mains electricity, solar power, or battery operation), the energiser's performance (charging and discharging energy) is a critical factor to consider.
With a wide selection of energisers available, here are four key points to help you choose the right model.

Power Rating: The power of the energiser, also known as impulse energy (measured in Joules), should be matched to the size of your pasture, specifically the length of the fence, as well as the type of animal (pigs).

Pigs are relatively easy to contain due to their conductive skin and short fur, and they often touch the fence with their sensitive snouts, which have even higher conductivity. The minimum voltage for easily contained animals is 2,000 volts; however, we recommend using at least 3,000 volts. This voltage can typically be achieved with a low impulse energy of less than 1.0 Joule, especially in areas with minimal vegetation.

It’s advisable to opt for an energiser with a higher power rating than you currently need, allowing for future expansions of the fence or adjustments for increased vegetation.

Power Supply: Depending on the location of your pig enclosure, different power supply options are available. Whenever possible, we recommend using a mains-powered energiser (230V). Mains units are splash-proof, but they should be installed in a sheltered location, such as inside a barn or shed.

If your pigs are kept in remote areas or using mobile fencing systems, a solar-powered energiser is the best option. This will make you independent of a fixed power connection, eliminating the need to recharge batteries or replace them.

Battery-operated energisers are suitable for mobile or temporary grazing areas, particularly in regions with heavy rainfall.

Quality and Durability: We only stock branded units from reputable manufacturers. These energisers are designed and tested for rigorous agricultural use and are equally suitable for private use. They are weather-resistant, durable, and feature high-quality stainless steel contacts along with robust switches and buttons. Additionally, Gallagher devices come with a seven-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Accessories: If you wish to do more than just fence your pasture, such as controlling the pig fence remotely with your smartphone, you can find compatible accessories for energisers in each product description.

Consider enhancing your new device with a lightning protection system, the appropriate number of earth stakes and earth cables, and for battery-operated devices, ensure you have the corresponding battery or rechargeable unit.
