Horse Posts Buyer's Guide

Posts for horses

If you want to safely enclose your horses and ponies in a pasture or paddock, you will need not only a good electric fence energiser and conductor materials but also high-quality and durable fence posts specifically designed for horses. When selecting fence posts for horses, several important factors should be considered to ensure the fence is secure, long-lasting, and suitable for horse enclosures. The most important factor is the fence height. We recommend paying attention to the following points when choosing your posts:

Purpose: Depending on how you plan to use the posts, different types and materials are recommended. Wood and recycled plastic posts are the top choice for permanent fencing. Line posts are ideal for fences that are either permanent or occasionally moved, and plastic posts are the best option for mobile fences.

Fence Height: Horses are quite tall animals, so the fence must be high enough. We recommend that the top strand of the conductor material be placed at around 130–135 cm (4.2–4.4 feet) in height. Additionally, it’s advisable to add two more fence lines, one at 50 cm (1.6 feet) and another at 90 cm (3 feet). For ponies, a final height of 115 cm (3.8 feet) is sufficient.

Since the posts are driven into the ground, they should have a minimum length of 150 cm (5 feet). The posts must be stable and well-anchored to avoid damage caused by the horses and reduce the risk of injury. Ensure there are no sharp edges or splinters on the posts.

Durability: The fence posts must be weather and UV-resistant, as well as particularly long-lasting. This ensures that the fence will stand securely for years and require minimal maintenance. Look for manufacturer details regarding durability and warranties. All our posts are manufactured to a high standard and do not require additional treatment with protective or preservative agents.

Cost: Costs vary depending on the material and quality of the posts. While personal taste is important, budget considerations should also be kept in mind. We offer many brands across various price categories, giving you plenty of options to find the perfect posts for your horse fence.

Different Materials Available

Wood: The classic choice for paddock fencing. Wooden posts offer a traditional, visually appealing look and are environmentally friendly, providing high stability. Although installation is more labour-intensive, wood posts (such as Insultimber) can last up to 30 years. The material is resistant to fungal decay and requires no maintenance, making it ideal for permanent fences.

Recycled Plastic: An eco-friendly option that offers all the benefits of wooden posts, with added resistance to UV light, acids, alkalis, and rot. Recycled plastic posts (Eco-posts) are made from recycled plastic, contributing to environmental protection while providing excellent longevity, making them financially sustainable in the long run. Ideal for permanent horse fencing.

Plastic: The most cost-effective option, especially for mobile fencing systems. Plastic posts are lightweight, often come with integrated holders for electric fence conductors, and can be easily repositioned. They are highly weather and UV-resistant but do not last as long as wooden or recycled posts.

Step-in Posts: Taller posts that are ideal for semi-permanent horse fences. They are easy to handle thanks to their practical step-in foot post design.

Line Post: A modern innovation that combines the benefits of plastic and fibreglass posts. The core is made of fibreglass, wrapped in a UV-resistant polyethylene coating, making these posts particularly stable, flexible, durable, and lightweight. The flexibility of adjustable clips and insulators, which can be mounted at any height, adds versatility. These line posts are perfect for both permanent and temporary fences, as they can be installed and dismantled multiple times.
