Electric fence conductors for horses
|
When choosing materials for electric horse fencing, there are several key factors to ensure the fence is safe, durable, and suitable for containing horses. We recommend considering the following.
Visibility: Horses are prey animals with a strong flight instinct. If they feel threatened or spooked, they are more likely to run blindly. For this reason, horse fences must be highly visible so they can easily recognise the barrier and avoid accidentally running into it.
Safety: Horses can injure themselves severely if they get tangled in or hit a poorly visible fence. Therefore, it's important to avoid using thin metal wires or fine strands, which can cut or scrape horses if they collide with them.
Durability: Since horse fences require wider tapes or ropes for visibility, they must be resistant to wind, UV rays, and other weather conditions that could degrade the material over time. High-quality, UV-resistant materials should be chosen to ensure long-term durability.
Our conductor recommendations for horses
Tape: Tape is our top choice for electric horse fences. It can be used for both mobile and permanent fences. Depending on your needs, tapes in widths of 12.5mm and 20mm are ideal for mobile fences, while 40mm is best for permanent setups. The tapes are made from electrical conductors (stainless steel and copper) woven with plastic fibres (polywire) in white or coloured versions. Horses can easily see this material, reducing the risk of injury. Colours range from white, green, to terra, with contrast stripes added for enhanced visibility.
EquiFence (Horsewire): EquiFence is a special type of wire designed specifically for horse fencing. It’s made from high-quality materials that are extremely durable and weather-resistant, offering outstanding conductivity. TurboStar EquiFence has a resistance of just 0.0115 Ohm/m, while standard EquiFence is 0.035 Ohm/m—ideal for long fences. We recommend EquiFence for permanent setups, as its initial cost is higher but offset by its exceptional durability of up to 30 years.
Rope (Cord): Rope is one of the most commonly used conductor materials for electric fences. It’s an excellent choice for mobile fencing, offering high visibility for horses, ponies, and other large animals. The conductors, made of stainless steel and copper, are woven with plastic fibres to form a smooth rope. This unique design improves conductivity. The rope is robust, non-stretch, and durable. It’s also easy to install and can be rolled up on a reel when not in use.
