Goat Post Buyer's Guide

Fence posts for goats

If you’re looking to build a secure goat fence, you'll need not only an electric fence energiser and conductor materials but also high-quality, durable fence posts designed to work for goats fencing.
Key Factors to Consider When Choosing Goat Fence Posts
When selecting fence posts for goats, several important aspects must be taken into account to ensure the fence is secure, long-lasting, and suitable for goat husbandry. The most critical factor is fence height.

Consider the following points

Purpose: Depending on whether you want to build a permanent or temporary fence, different types and materials are recommended. Recycled and wooden posts are the top choices for a permanent goat fence. Line posts offer a great compromise for either permanent or occasionally movable fences, while plastic posts are ideal for mobile fencing solutions. If you prefer something even simpler, you might consider using a goat net or the convenient SmartFence.

Fence Height: While goats are not particularly large animals, they are excellent climbers. We recommend positioning the top wire at a height of approximately 105 to 110 cm. Additionally, it is advisable to install three more wires at heights of 80 cm, 50 cm, and 25 cm.

Since the posts will be anchored into the ground, ensure you account for the portion that will be buried in the soil. The posts must be stable and securely anchored to prevent damage from the goats. Also, check that there are no sharp edges or splinters.

Durability: If your goat fence is to be used for many years, it’s essential to select materials that are weather-resistant, UV-resistant, and exceptionally durable. This ensures the posts remain securely in place over time without the need for maintenance. Please refer to our product descriptions for details regarding durability and manufacturer warranties. Our fence posts are manufactured to high standards and do not require additional treatment with protective or impregnating agents.

Cost: Costs vary based on material, manufacturer, and quality. Personal preference and budget will play significant roles in your decision. We offer models across various price ranges, so you have a wide selection to find the perfect fence post for your goat enclosure.

Types of fence post materials

  • Plastic: Plastic posts are the most affordable option and, alongside goat nets, are the most commonly used for temporary fencing systems. They are lightweight, easy to transport and install, and often come with integrated holders for the electric conductor. While plastic posts are weather- and UV-resistant, they typically do not last as long as wooden or recycled posts. However, their versatility and lower cost are significant advantages.
  • Line Posts: These posts combine the benefits of plastic and fibreglass. The core is made from fibreglass and coated with a UV-resistant polyethylene layer. This makes line posts particularly stable, flexible, durable, and lightweight. They feature adjustable clips and insulators that can be easily mounted at the desired height, making them ideal for both permanent and temporary fences. The smallest version (1.40 m) is perfect for goat fencing.
  • Wood: A traditional goat fence is constructed using wooden posts. These are a classic choice for farmers who appreciate aesthetics and environmental harmony. They provide excellent stability and can last up to 30 years. Although installation is more labour-intensive, this effort pays off in the longevity of permanent fences. The wood used is resistant to fungal decay and requires no maintenance.
  • Recycled Plastic: Eco-posts are an environmentally friendly option that offers all the advantages of wooden posts while being particularly resistant to UV light, acids, alkalis, and rot. As the name suggests, recycled posts are made from recycled plastic, contributing to environmental protection while also being a sustainable financial choice due to their durability. They are ideally suited for permanent goat fences.
