Goat Energiser Buyer's Guide

Energisers for goat fencing

Goats are incredibly agile animals, always on the hunt for fresh greenery, and they are not easily deterred. For secure goat farming, a reliable grazing fence is essential. It ensures that the herd remains contained and prevents the animals from wandering outside the enclosure in search of food.

A crucial element of an electric goat fence is the energiser. In addition to the various power supply options (mains electricity, solar power, or battery operation), the performance (charging and discharging energy) is an important factor to consider. Given the wide range of devices available, here are some tips to help you select the right model.

Power Rating: The power of the energiser, also known as impulse energy (measured in Joules), should be matched to the size of your grazing area, specifically the length of the fence, as well as the type of animal (goats).

Goats can be challenging to contain due to their clever and curious nature. To ensure that the animals feel a contact with the fence, a powerful electric energiser with a high output voltage and significant discharging energy (at least 5 Joules) is required. The voltage of the electric fence should typically be around 2,000 volts at all points.

We recommend always opting for a higher power rating to allow for future expansions of the fence or adjustments for increased vegetation.

Power Supply: Depending on the location of your fence, various power sources are available to operate the energiser. We recommend using a mains-powered unit (230V) wherever possible; however, this requires a nearby fixed power supply. Mains units are also splash-proof, so they must be installed in a sheltered area, such as a barn or under a shed roof.

As goats are often kept in remote grazing areas and mobile fencing systems, a solar-powered energiser is frequently the best choice. This option allows you to be independent of a fixed power supply, eliminating the need to recharge batteries or replace them.

Battery-operated devices are recommended for temporary grazing areas, especially in regions with less sunlight. They are lightweight and portable, making them flexible to use.

Quality and Durability: We offer only branded units from reputable manufacturers. These devices are designed and tested for rigorous agricultural use and are also suitable for private use. They are weather-resistant, durable, and feature high-quality stainless steel contacts, as well as robust switches and buttons. Additionally, Gallagher devices come with a seven-year manufacturer’s warranty.

4. Accessories

If you want to do more than just fence your pasture, such as controlling the goat fence remotely with your smartphone, compatible accessories for energisers can be found in each product description.

Consider enhancing your new device with a lightning protection system, the appropriate number of earth stakes and cables, and for battery-operated devices, ensure you have the corresponding battery or rechargeable unit.
