Cattle Energiser Buyer's Guide

Energisers for cattle

If you want to securely fence in your cows, calves, and bulls in the field, the first thing you need is a powerful electric fence energiser. This energiser ensures that your cattle stay safely in the field while also protecting against unwanted intruders.
The range of energisers available can be overwhelming, with various power supply options (mains, solar, or battery), and the output power (charge and discharge energy) being important factors to consider.
Here’s a quick guide to help you choose the right device without too much hassle. Just keep the following four points in mind.

Power Output: The power, also known as pulse energy (measured in Joules), should be suited to the size of your pasture and the length of the fence, as well as the type of animals being contained. Since cattle are relatively easy to manage, we recommend energisers with an output of at least 1 Joule for small pastures. For larger areas or fences with significant vegetation, you'll need a more powerful device (2-5 joules or more).
It’s always a good idea to buy an energiser with higher output than currently needed, leaving room for future expansion or dealing with overgrown vegetation.

Power Source: Depending on where your fence is located, different power options are available:

Mains-Powered (230V): If your fence is near a fixed power supply, we recommend using a mains-powered energiser, as they provide a consistent power source and can support higher energy needs over long distances. These need to be installed in a sheltered area, like a barn or shed, as they are only protected against splashing water.

Solar-Powered: For remote pastures or mobile fencing setups, solar energisers are the best choice. Solar energisers are completely independent of mains power, and you won't need to worry about recharging batteries, making them more eco-friendly and cost-effective in the long run. Thanks to recent advancements, many solar devices can operate for up to 3 weeks without direct sunlight – normal daylight is usually enough to keep them charged.

Battery-Powered: These are ideal for temporary, mobile or remote pastures. Depending on the energiser’s power, batteries will need replacing after 65-90 days. Rechargeable fence batteries will need recharging every 5-35 days, so make sure you have spare batteries or a backup charger to avoid downtime. Battery energisers (or solar energisers) are recommended if you often fence of certain areas for your cattle.

Quality and Durability: We stock only branded energisers from well-known manufacturers like Gallagher. These devices are built and tested for the demanding conditions of farm use. They are weather-resistant, durable, and come with high-quality stainless steel contacts and robust switches and buttons.
Gallagher energisers, for example, come with a 7-year manufacturer's warranty for added peace of mind.

Accessories: If you want more than just a standard fence, such as remote control via smartphone, suitable accessories are available in the product descriptions for each energiser.
Additionally, complement your new device with a lightning protection system, the appropriate number of earth rods and cables, and for battery-powered devices, ensure you have the necessary batteries or chargers.
